The name is inspired by the famous sinking of the HMS Birkenhead just s few km down the coastline. Walker Bay is located in the  Western Cape province of South Africa. It is the next major bay between False Bay near Cape Town and Cape Agulhas to the south-east. The bay is famous for having some of the best land based whale-watching in the world, thus the inspiration for the whale tail logo.

Benson has been with the brewery for many years and is the reason the beer has gone from strength to strength. He is the backbone of the brewing operation and reason for the success the beer has achieved. Birkenhead that floundered on the coast close to the estate in 1852 on the 26th of February. Walker Bay is known as one of the coolest wine wards with an average summer day temperature of 28 °C. And at the Birkenhead Brewery, besides doing boutique Walker Bay wine tasting , we also offer craft beer and cider.
